Stephan: Enorm viele. Eigentlich fast alles.

F.: Ein weiteres Ihrer großartigen Alben ist The Dramatic and Fantastic Stories of Egar Allen Poe, eine Doppel-CD, gewidmet dem brühmten anglo-amerikanischen Schriftsteller.

F.: Haben Sie schon immer in Berlin gelebt?

NEW AGE and New Sounds (Italy)

MYTHOS - Il cuore elettronico di Berlino

Question: Your band called Mythos is one of the more interesting projects
created in the EM soundscape, formed in 1969. According to You, what kind of
things are changing in these years in the Electronic and space music?

Stephan: Enormously much. Probably nearly everything. The technical facilities, the ideological background and the way of producing the music.
Remember: in the 70s the synthesizers could generate one sound at a time; if you changed it, the first version was lost. Today the digital equipment has available nearly countless sounds and programs at a fingertip, identically until the last bit. That's why we do not need a lot of instruments and musicians to produce the music or to perform concerts. Some musicians are on stage just with a laptop. Some performers on the stages are not even musicians.....
Also on the ideological side there are profoundly changes. In the 70s we have been a kind of explorers, scouts or ambassadors for a progressive youth and political movement. Surely kind of inconsistently and inconsequently, but there was "something". Today I'm afraid there is only a few background. Not much on the side of the musicians either on the side of the consumers.

Q: How important are the digital developments for a musician creating EM?

S: As I said, it changed much. A certain quantity on behalf of the sounds but predominantly concerning the way of producing and reproducing the music. This is not only positive. In example: Identical "laptop concerts" can be much less creative.

Q: In your albums we can find a lot of cosmic atmospheres, psychedelic
(above all in your first works) elements, but at the same time there are
Oriental echoes (in Meditation and in The Modern ELECTRONIC Kamasutra). I
think that your compositions are not only based on electronic sounds, but
also on “organic”, acoustic texture. Do you want realize a blend of these
musical aspects?

S: That's exactly what I'm aiming for since ever. It probably sounds strange, but I nearly always did musically exactly what I liked. I agree that this is not very commercially but if I have ideas and imaginations, I realise them without asking or thinking about the amount of sales or what reviewers are going to say.

Q: Speaking about Meditation and The Modern ELECTRONIC Kamasutra
albums, could you explain the genesis and the concepts beyond these great works?

S: Sometimes new synthesizers inspire me and lead me to certain atmospheres and moods. And sometimes at first there is the theme, the task, the mission. Concerning the Kamasutra there have been corresponding new synths and sounds. From these associations the idea arose and I realised them. The ELECTRONIC Four Seasons have other roots, sources. You know some years before, I realised Vivaldi's Classical Four Seasons for my company. On synthesizer. Therefrom occured the wish to create a new form, the ELECTRONIC Four Seasons of the 20th century, with my own compositions.

Q: You are a brilliant multi-instrumentalist. You play flute, sitar,
keyboards and guitar. When did you start to learn music? And why did you
choose to play an Indian instrument like the sitar?

S: I'm afraid some of you could be disappointed but since the early 80s, exactly after the legendary sky-lps "Quasar" and the "Grand Prix", I did not touch my guitar (a 1971 Strat !), the flute or the sitar. The production alternatives did change so fundamentally. I would never have accomplished such huge amounts of music for those 2-, 3-, 4- and 6-cd albums on conventional ways. Believe it or not: I'm just playing certain parts of my compositions on the keyboard but mainly program sounds, sequencers and computers.
Concerning my learning music I can tell you that I am a complete autodidact, a self-educated musician and technician. I got my first guitar at the age of 14, my first flute aged 17 and my sitar aged 20. The latter I just found during a tour in a little city.

Q: Another of your great albums is The Dramatic and Fantastic Stories
of Edger Allen Poe, a double cd dedicated to this illustrious Anglo-American
writer. Why this choice to compose a disc about him?

S: To be honest, it was the idea and the wish of the "genius behind the curtains" of my record company: Jürgen Jacobsen. I was inspired at once because of knowing some of Poe's legendary stories. All in all I worked thereafter nearly 18 months at this very special double album. I started reading all the Poe books I could get, chose titles, made a conception and finally composed, recorded and mixed all the tracks.

Q: Have you always lived in Berlin? If it is so, do you think that this capital is full of the same creativity of the Seventies (when it was frequented by Lou Reed, or Bowie, or Nick Cave…)?

S: Yes, I was born here and I'm a kind of Berlin "dinosaur". There is still and again a huge amount of creativity in this city but it is of a totally other kind as it was in the 70s. It must be! The world changed dramatically, the people are mostly not the same, the music universum is nearly exploding............, some like it, some hate it. I prefer to stay optimistic and to go my own way consequently.

Q: What kind of projects have You planned for the next months?

S: Just now there are a lot of projects "in the pipeline".
To be honest, that's why I'm looking forward to nice spring weather. I love to get on the mountain bike again and also to practice for the first (in April) of many speed skating marathons I'm paticipating as often as possible.
To "benefit" from the bad weather now I'm busy composing and producing at a very special project. You will be the first to hear from me when it is ripe for annunciation. Please visit the official Mythos homepage from time to time (www.mythos-music-berlin.de), there everybody will be right at the pulse of the Mythos evolution.
