Laser-Keyboard, Flute, Electronic Bagpipes, Yamaha Tenori-On, Korg Vocoder VC-10, Quasimidi Raven Max, Quasimidi Sirius, Quasimidi Polymorph, Quasimidi 309, Korg M1EX, Mutron Bi-Phase, Korg Kaoss Pad, Yamaha Spx90-II, Yamaha mixer & monitoring system.

MYTHOS - UNABSTEIGBAR!

"Unabsteigbar!" by Stephan Kaske, aka Mythos, is a limited edition EP
in a special amaray-case. It contains 44-minutes of groovy music
performed live at Em-Breakfast in December 2009 in Bochum, Germany.
The five tracks found here contain all dynamic new music, and sees
vocoder fragments interact with beat-driven melodic and rhythmic
structures with an occasional tad of the Berliner School style showing
up as well. The sequencer patterns are sometimes prominent, as e.g. on
the lively "Em-Breakfast in Bochum", which shows the typical skills
and trademarks of Mythos' music. This concert souvenir should please
all who liked Mr Kaske's previous output, but will also be rewarding
to all who like accessible and melodic electronics keenly merging
elements of contemporary and traditional EM.

STYLE

Bright, beat driven electronica. Stephan Kaske delivers a live performance of his unique post-Berlin school synthetic groove. Programmed beats maintain mid-tempo pace for much of the album, mostly with a bright spring in the rolling patterns. The beats are accompanied by sequencer structures that carry the rhythms with almost equal prominence - arpeggios and percussives entwining and enhancing one another. Melodic content is strong; positive themes with clean tones interlock with the rhythmic underplay. At times heavily altered voices murmur among the more digitally oriented sounds, ethnic chimes and clangs punctuating the percolating sequences. There are a number of atmospheric passages, mostly during the introductions where the music is softer, more airy.

ARTWORK
Unabsteigbar! arrives in a DVD style case of malleable plastic. The insert folds so that artwork is visible both inside and out. The front cover has a lone figure in stark silhouette trudging across a barren landscape with flat horizon. Everything is saturated in deep red hues, the walker ringed with an incomplete pale circle. The rear cover extends the scenery leftward and has a live photograph of the artist inserted midway. Track titles are found here on the back as well as brief technical details and the Mellow Jet logo. Inside is a panel of recording information, website addresses and credits.

OVERALL

Mythos shows once again that the sound of Stephan Kaske is pretty much as dynamic and complex live as it is when given the full studio treatment. This collection of five mid-length tracks was recorded live at EM-Breakfast in Bochum and totals about forty five minutes altogether. This latest release via the Mellow Jet label follows up the previous live album Gallery Concerts. If you'd like to get an idea of what to expect - there is a Youtube video that shows the multi-instrumentalist at work. Promotional material provides an on-tour equipment list for those interested in the sound sources: Laser-Keyboard, Flute, Electronic Bagpipes, Yamaha Tenori-On, Korg Vocoder VC-10, Quasimidi Raven Max, Quasimidi Sirius, Quasimidi Polymorph, Quasimidi 309, Korg M1EX, Mutron Bi-Phase, Korg Kaoss Pad, Yamaha Spx90-II, Yamaha mixer & monitoring system.

GUTS OF DARKNESS (Kanada)

"unabsteigbar!"

Recorded on the occasion of an electronic breakfast in the city of Bochum on December 6th 2009, this new EP of Mythos is in the same vein, and even a little more daring, as Gallery Concerts. A rather mini explosive concert for a lunch!
Sinuous reverberation opens Live in Bochum. Hopping chords scroll in loops and are subdivided to create a series of arpeggios which finds its harmony in a fine minimalism echo. A synthesized line escapes from it, humming a melody pummeled by slamming percussions, a vocoder, orchestral crashes and these infinite sequential loops which tumble on a synth to twisted solos of which are countless. A heavy title livened up by feverish sequences and by audacious solos, opens the menu of this musical lunch where Mythos spreads its complex sound creativity with a master hand. Because Mythos music is not that easier to imagine! It’s music rich in tones and rhythms of which the main rule is the duality of harmonies versus a very heterogeneous musical contingent. Aloha Hawai is a beautiful example. A pulsating sequence leads a suave pace, centered on a fine line of bass. This soft rhythmic with a sound slightly xylophoned, is constantly sprayed with big sound serpentines and with percussions to uneven flows, while the synth structures a robotics voice, among light arpeggios which drag around in a sound fauna to short and constantly split up melodious fragments. A very experimental musical piece that seduces all the same, with its sequential and sonorous multiplicity. EM-Breakfast in Bochum is the ‘’pièce de résistance’’ on this Mythos EP. A very beautiful title shakes of a hesitating tempo which, gradually, gets dressed of its most beautiful sound assets that multiply ceaselessly. A great sound structure where harmonies fuse from everywhere on desynchronized sequences which recall the steps of a drunken cat wandering in a rich musical universe based on a minimalism and hypnotic movement. An excellent title! unabsteigbar! follows with its synth-pop approach in a psychedelic electronic universe. Halfway between Jarre and Daft Punk, unabsteigbar! swarms with a synthetic life in an eclectic universe, while maintaining its dance floor beat. Mythos Analog encloses magnificently unabsteigbar! with a slow pulsation which progresses lazily in a musical world as rich as heterogeneous where strange synth solos shape a musical world at once strange and mesmerizing.
The more it progresses, the more it structures a sonorous wealth that doesn’t stop charming, as these flickered wings which glance through and glide of everywhere over a sequence of which the heaviness doesn’t affect its magnetism and which recall these old galleys where slaves rowed.
unabsteigbar! is some very good Mythos. Ingenious and creative Mythos, which always maintains its balance between the traditional, sometimes synth-pop, electronic music and its psychedelic approach as attractive as intriguing. Less accessible than Gallery Concerts, due to its very audacious arrangements, unabsteigbar! will know how to charm Mythos fans and followers of an EM which stretches its charms until the limits of psychedelic and metallic Krautrock.
